Travel and Tourism Industry DialogueThe tourism industry – which employs around 10% of the world’s workforce and impacts 850 million consumers annually – finds itself in a unique position to help limit the spread of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria. With this in mind, the Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria (GBC) proposes to provide a forum to mobilize the private sector in an effort to formulating an effective strategy to fight against these three diseases. The rapid expansion of AIDS has been accelerated in part by the increased mobility of travelers around the globe. This is why the tourism industry can play a vital role in the promotion of sensible behavior and the prevention of illnesses among their clients, many of whom are traveling to regions with elevated rates of infection. This effort equally concerns the programs that are for communities, targeting the millions of employees of this industry who are mostly young and single, so by consequence very exposed to AIDS and Tuberculosis. The "Travel and Tourism Industry Dialogue", a GBC initiative created with Europ Assistance, Accor, Club Med and Air France, addresses the rising challenges posed by HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria in the travel and tourism sector and looks to mobilize the resources and unique skills of these companies, in view of a response from the sector with a strong global impact. Following the creation of a best practices guide book and two informational films on AIDS and malaria, platform members continue their action by developing a global prevention quiz and a testing campaign for hotel and resort employees in the Dakar region in Senegal. |
