Austria

MAIN HEALTH RISKS

  • Following the apparition in the country of several cases of avian flu on wild birds in 2006, and more recently in Hungary, health authorities remain vigilant.
  • Due to the presence of ticks, there is a risk of catching the Lyme disease or tick-borne encephalitis in wooded areas.


FOOD SAFETY

  • No specific risk.


IMMUNIZATIONS AND MEDICATION

  • No specific immunization is required from travelers entering the country.
  • Systematically:

  • Hepatitis B: the vaccination is available for children at least two months old.
  • Diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis: get a booster shot before leaving if your last shot is more than ten years old.


  • Depending on the duration and conditions of the trip:

  • Tick-borne encephalitis: for stays in rural areas or for hikers. The immunization is available for children at least one year old.

CLIMATE

  • The climate is continental in northern and eastern Austria, with important rainfalls in the summer.
  • There are important differences in temperatures between the seasons (hot in the summer, cold in the winter) and snowfalls are abundant during the winter in Western Austria (mountainous area).
